The Magic of Hops: The Rock Star of Craft Beer

Hops are the powerhouse ingredient behind the fruity aro`matics, bitterness, and flavour in our beers. Depending on when they're added during the brewing process and the specific variety used, hops can dramatically shape a beer’s character. They’re kind of the 'rock star' ingredient in craft beer. Bold, dynamic, and always in the spotlight.

There are many different varieties of hops, and Aotearoa is home to some of the most sought-after ones in the world. Some hops even develop a cult following, with craft beer enthusiasts eagerly tracking what’s trending. That’s why at Urbanaut, we always highlight the hops we use in our tasting notes and sometimes even name beers after them, especially when we want to showcase a particular variety.

Most of our beers feature a blend of hops, creating layers of complexity and depth in their aromatics. But every now and then, we craft a ‘single-hopped’ beer to let one variety shine, fresh hops are perfect for this! Fresh hops are incredibly aromatic and complex (not to mention expensive), making them a real treat in the brewing world.
